Go-to Wine Merchants! Go-to Wines! – Part 2

Tim Hendrickson works out of J. Webb Wine Merchants at Glenmore Landing and is second up for My New Year’s request: Point me to a red and a white with excellent value and a cool story.
I had the pleasure of taking a wine program where Tim expertly led the segment on Saki. He is an engaging presenter with an extensive background in local wine industry. When I walk into the store, I can count on him producing an outstanding wine with a unique story.
For white, he went with the 2020 Ricca Terra Fiano from the Riverland Region of Southern Australia. The vineyards making up Ricca Terra were part of an Australian government program that provided small plots to soldiers returning from world wars. Now owned by Ashley and Holly Ratcliff, the focus has shifted from French to Mediterranean varietals. This change has resulted in a five-star designation and a listing in the Top 10 upcoming wineries in Australia. Being from a warm, dry climate gives this wine tropical pineapple on the palate with some nut, honey and spice on the finish. Well blended and a perfect pair with a soy-glazed salmon.
Tim then highlighted the Miroglio family from Alba, Italy who branched out in 2004 with the acquisition of the Edoardo Miroglio Winery in Bulgaria. The Elenovo Vineyards have shown great promise with Pinot Nero and local varietals Mavrud, Rubin and Melnik. He noted the sparkling wines from Edoardo are outstanding but hard to come across. Tim’s red recommendation, the 2017 Pinot Noir from Nova Zagora, was impressive both in winemaking and value. It spent 15 months in French oak so with along with Morello cherry profile, it gave vanilla and smoke on the finish. I am excited to try one of the local varietals next as the Mavrud is available in store. Make sure you seek out Tim at J. Webb if you are keen to try some unique and lesser known wines and varietals. His expertise will astound!
