Vina Cubillo Crianza – Rioja – 2008 (Metrovino)
Wow! If this is Crianza then what the heck does his Gran Reserva taste like. I am floored by the power of this wine and yet I can’t say it doesn’t have a bit of finesse as well. If you want a real treat for yourself and don’t mind paying a bit of a price I would go up the ladder and try R. Lopez de Heredia’s upper end. This is truly a classic Rioja producer! For me this is why I will take Rioja over Bordeaux as the value here is just excellent even at about $40. Robert Parker says it can be so easy to drink that it’s dangerous and I agree 100%.
Tasting Notes: Dark Cherry , red currant with hints of vanilla and a bit of a garrigue quality as well as balsamic notes. Wonderfully balanced, how can a wine be so elegant and yet powerful.
