Trinity Hill – Marsanne Viognier – 2016
This wine was a gift from good friends of ours who were kind enough to cart this bottle back from the North Island of New Zealand from the world famous Gimblett Gravels in the Hawkes Bay area. This area is about 90% red varietals but trying a white wine from this region that is not shipped out to Canada. It is a blend of Viognier and Marsanne, two grapes commonly found in the wines of the Southern Rhone.
This is a great full bodied white with lifted aromatics. The flowers dominate on the nose with honeysuckle and and acacia. The Marsanne adds great weight and richness to the wine. Lots of stone fruit and apricot definitely leads the way on the front palate. Very subtle hints of toast and nut on the mid palate and a long lingering smooth finish. I can see this wine as a wonderful pairing with a herb crusted pork tenderloin meal.
